The winner of the Nokia Young Fashion Designer Award 2008 was announced at a high profile fashion spectacular in Building 2, Whitaker Court, Sir John Rogerson's Quay, Dublin 2 on Tuesday, 11th March 2008.
Michelle Wilson, from Clonakilty in Co. Cork and currently in her fourth year in the Limerick School of Art and Design, wowed the specially selected judging panel with her winning design, entitled, ‘Iconic Reflections’.
Michelle was awarded with the coveted Nokia Young Fashion Designer Award 2008, as well as receiving a Nokia Prism handset, €5,000 and media profiling opportunities for the year.
This year students from colleges across the country, were invited to submit a mood board and design notebook illustrating one individual outfit inspired by Nokia's latest fashion handset, the sleek and mysterious Nokia Prism. After beating numerous entries, 21 finalists then brought their Prism inspired creations to life at the glamorous Nokia Young Fashion Designer Award fashion show finale.
Michelle's design consisted of asymmetric layers of fluid, elegantly draped shimmering fabric, which hung from architecturally built-up shoulders. 800 fire opal Swarovski crystals clustered on kingfisher blue chiffon adorned left side of the garment.
The asymmetrical layering of the kingfisher blue and the shimmering black provided beautiful, tonal changes and flashes of colour within the garment, which came to life on the prism inspired catwalk.
