Sony's new VAIO Z ultraportable laptop with Power Media Dock

Now that we've seen Sony's new VAIO Z in its luscious press shots, it's time to face reality and lay our itchy hands on this 13-inch ultraportable laptop, along with its eccentric expansion dock that packs both a Blu-ray drive and an AMD Radeon HD 6650M graphics chip (with 1GB of video RAM).

Just as we were told by our little birdie, said dock is connected to the notebook via Light Peak -- a first for Sony -- but there's a catch: Sony's only implementing the architecture and not the connector, so for the time being, this sweet high speed connection is only compatible with the docking unit and nothing else.

Anyhow, here's a quick recap: what we have here is a 1.18kg feather-light machine packing a 256GB SSD and 1.3 megapixel webcam, plus a matte LCD display with resolution at 1600 x 900 or an optional 1920 x 1080.
Oh yes, for an extra cost, you get some sweet full HD action at just 13 inches. This upgraded display performed well in the relatively dark confines of the press event, but how it fares under direct sunlight remains to be seen. Read on for more hands-on impression.

Motorola mobile - The first smartphone to operate using fingerprint recognition

It is the mobile phone designed to appeal to a man's inner James Bond - or those with secrets. The Motorola ATRIX is the first smartphone to operate using fingerprint recognition to ensure it can only be accessed by the genuine owner. The ATRIX owner swipes their finger on the touchscreen a number of times when it is fresh out of the box to identify them as the authorised user. From that point on, every time they touch the power button it will recognise the fingerprint and approve operation.

The ATRIX is marketed as the most powerful smartphone in the world on the basis it can be plugged into a range of docks that convert it into a laptop, personal computer, media centre, or a sat-nav. There is an eye-catching 'lapdock', which looks like a slimline laptop but has no computer processor. Here the phone sits in a cradle while the dock is used like a normal laptop.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 - First Look

We Could Soon Be Ordering Food on Rubber-Coated Tablet Menus

A new mass-market service called E la Carte is now testing their tablet menu at twenty different restaurants around Boston and San Francisco. The tablets are specially rubber-coated, and won't die out on you when you're ordering because they've got day-long battery life. Sure, iPad menus have been done before! But these E la Carte tablets could be a better alternative for restaurant owners; they're cheaper, more durable, and designed specifically for this purpose.

And if you're just beginning to doubt how ubiquitous these tablet menus might turn out to be, let this little tidbit change your mind: The company behind the service is expected to announce a deal with a major national chain soon—word is, it'll be Applebee's.

Now, what can you do with these digital menus exactly? A lot! You'll be able to customize and place your orders on it, split the check, or play games while you wait for your food. You can even calculate your tips! But then again, perhaps you won't need to be so generous if your menu's done more work than your waiter. [Techcrunch via Eater]

Quad-core Tegra 3 tablet being planned by ASUS

The Eee Pad Transformer may be wowing tablet lovers with its unbeatable price-to-features ratio today, but ASUS looks to have its sights set on even mightier devices for the future. DigTimes reports that the Taiwanese company is hard at work on a Tegra 3 tablet -- built around the spectacular Kal-El quad-core SOC that we saw demonstrated at MWC 2011 -- as well as another one running an Intel CPU.

As far as the Intel slate is concerned, we're probably looking at the tablet-centric 1.5GHz Atom Z670, which promises 1080p playback and great battery life. You'll forgive us if we reserve our excitement for the Tegra 3-powered tablet, however, which should be able to churn through quite a few more pixels than regular old 1080p. There's no indication on when ASUS intends to deliver it, but NVIDIA's roadmap for devices with the quad-core chip expects to start appearing in August. Video of that awe-inspiring MWC demo follows after the break.

Gmail now stores up to 25,000 contacts for the insanely popular

Are you quietly proud of the girth of your social circle? Do you think having 146 Facebook buddies is impressive? Snap out of it, saddo. Some Gmail users have thousands upon thousands of contacts in their list -- so many, in fact, that they've been begging Google to increase its 10,000 limit.
The Big G has now obliged these jabbering fiends, yanking the limit up to 25,000 and also boosting available cloud storage to 128KB per contact instead of 32KB. We imagine this could be of some help to business users perhaps, or those nice strangers who send out stock tips. But for the rest of us, the gesture is about as inconsequential as the professionally good-looking.
