US First Lady Michelle Obama has rolled up her sleeves to harvest some of the vegetables she planted in the White House kitchen garden in April.
The mum-of-two was joined by the same group of 25 local children who helped in planting the seedlings in the 1,100-square-foot L-shaped plot on the South Lawn.
While the group concentrated on picking lettuce and peas, the garden has also produced broccoli, aubergines and herbs, which are garnered every night.
A champion of healthy eating, Mrs Obama – who is a big fan of organic produce – ensured the vegetables were grown without using fertiliser or herbicide. The White House soil had been “Amended”, however, with crab meal from the Chesapeake Bay, green sand compost, and lime powder, say officials.
Afterwards the green-fingered workers enjoyed a picnic during which 45-year-old Michelle thanked them, saying: "Today is the culmination of a lot of hard work"
